Join us for LBB's next COMS Saturdays scheduled for Saturday, April 27th. If you struggle with navigating your home and community due to low vision? This is your chance to learn orientation and mobility skills and for your family or friends to learn sighted guide techniques to assist you! COMS Saturdays is designed to benefit our clients with vision loss and blindness, their family members and/or friends, and those in the community who want to learn the basics of orientation and mobility. LBB is hosting monthly trainings for clients to work individually with our Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMS) to sharpen cane skills, improve knowledge of compass directions, and properly navigate sidewalks and changes in terrain. Family and friends will learn the proper skills to be a sighted guide. Community partners, direct service providers, and those in the community interested in learning are welcome to join us. If this date does not work for your schedule, training will continue throughout the year on the last Saturday of each month. We look forward to seeing you! What is Orientation & Mobility? Orientation and mobility training helps people with a visual impairment learn how to navigate their environment with skills and confidence. This training will teach how to know where you are in an environment and create a plan to get where you want to go safely and successfully. Blind CAN Film Festival is free and begins today and continues through Saturday! “Canes*, Cameras, ACTION” is the slogan for the 4th annual Film Festival, in Tallahassee the Art's District and a day of free films at the Challenger Learning Center on Saturday. *Guide dogs are welcome. Organizers say the goal is simple, to raise awareness of what the blind CAN do, local to global, through entertainment.

The inaugural COMS Saturday was a huge success! LBB's CEO, @Kristina Wilfong Torrance, dreamed it and the community responded in a huge way! We had the opportunity to host more than 40 people at our office. In addition to perfect weather and great company, those with sight had the opportunity to be a sighted guide, while those with a visual impairment learned new tips for using their white canes. @StarMetro came out as well, giving demonstrations on safe boarding of their buses and planning routes. Promoting Women's Eye Health & Safety Month is important since women are at a higher risk for eye disease and eye related health issues. On average, because women live longer than men, their risk of developing eye conditions associated with aging are higher. Women also have unique health issues related to pregnancy and menopause due to fluctuating hormone levels. Women may notice changes in their ability to see clearly during pregnancy. Women with pre-existing conditions, like glaucoma, high blood pressure or diabetes, should alert their eye doctor of these conditions and be monitored closely before planning to become pregnant and during pregnancy. Dry eye also affects more than 3.2 million American women middle-aged and older.
